I’ve always felt wrap tails with hum-buckers are the very best sounding guitars. This one has a great punch to it, very nice open tone.
The guitar weights 9lbs. on the dot, and has a pretty average 59 neck. 22.25mm (0.876") at the 1st fret and 24.5mm (0.965") at the 11th. This puts it right in the middle of 59 neck sizes. The profile is about mid way between a C and a D shape.
As with all Retrospec's, its all old growth lumber and all hide glue except for the maple cap joint which is urea formaldehyde. Vintage style Nitro Cellulose finish with very fine checking and very light patina on it. It feels very comfortable.
Hardware is all top of the line reproduction hardware, including our own M-69 rings and pick guard made from Royalite. Inlays sourced from the original Italian manufacturer from the 50’s and the guitar comes in a custom flight case.
This guitar is very to unique to all other Retropec's in one special way: It was made in tribute to "The Black Burst”. The story goes that back in 1959 a gentleman wanted to order a Gibson Les Paul custom (all black paint) but couldn’t afford the premium price so he special ordered the lower end guitar (at the time) which was a Les Paul Standard, and had Gibson paint it all black. The way Gibson achieved this was to simply take an already painted guitar off the assembly line, which was painted in sunburst with cherry pore filler and they simply painted over it in black. The red pore filler and red pigment can be seen very faintly bleeding out from under the black around the binding. It's very subtle, but if you look you can spot traces of it.
